Automatic Consideration, Explained
"Automatically considered" is the most misread phrase in college merit money. It means the college will review your student for an award without a separate application — it does not mean the award, or any amount, is promised. 218 colleges in our verified dataset publish merit this way.
Three phrases, three different promises
Guaranteed automatic (Class A): the college's page promises the published amount when the printed criteria are met. Automatic consideration (Class B): the college reviews you automatically, but the amount — and whether you receive one — is its decision; published figures are amounts it may award. Competitive (Class C): a selection process with winners and losers; excluded from this site's tables entirely. Much of the confusion in merit-aid advice comes from treating the second phrase as if it were the first.
How to read a published consideration figure
Treat it as a ceiling, not an estimate. If a college publishes "up to $20,000" under automatic consideration, the only honest budget entries are $0 and "unknown, up to $20,000" — never $20,000. In the table below, every figure carries the annotation "published figure — not guaranteed," and the calculator shows Class B money in its own section, never added to guaranteed totals. When an offer letter arrives, the amount in it replaces the published figure; until then, plan on the guaranteed column.

For the awards below, the college automatically considers students who meet the published criteria, but the amount is not guaranteed. Figures shown are the college's published amounts a student may be awarded — read the official source for how selection and funding work.

Common questions
Does "automatically considered" mean my student will get the scholarship?
No. It means the college reviews every eligible admitted student for the award without a separate application. Whether your student receives anything, and how much, is the college's decision — the published figures describe what may be awarded, not what will be.
Why list money that isn't guaranteed?
Because families still have to build a college list, and a college that publishes its consideration figures is giving you its ceiling and its criteria — useful, as long as it is budgeted as possible money. We list it in its own tables, under its own label, and it is never summed with guaranteed money anywhere on this site.
How is this different from a competitive scholarship?
A competitive scholarship (Class C here) has its own selection process — often a separate application, essays, or interviews — and picks a small number of winners. Automatic consideration needs no extra step but also makes no promise. Guaranteed automatic awards (Class A) are the third case: no extra step, and the amount is promised on published criteria.
Where does the phrase appear?
On the colleges' own pages. Ohio State tells applicants they are "automatically considered for most merit awards" and that "Scholarships are not guaranteed"; Miami University pairs "automatically considered" with the same warning. When a college's own wording stops short of a promise, the row is Class B in our dataset — the label follows the college's language, not ours.
